Rhyme 4 Rhyme: A Bird In The Hand

Say look at this. I’ve been cleaning out my nest and I found an old book of my poetry…

Before all the corny family movies Ice Cube was one of the most hardcore emcees in the game.  He ripped mics and wasn’t afraid to tell the truth about the industry, politics and society as a whole.  “A Bird In The Hand” is one of the definitive songs of Ice Cube, in his prime.  In it he spoke on the bleak realities of a poor black male trying to survive.  You might say all gangsta rap songs are like that but look at the method Cube uses to speak on the subject matter.

It’s a story and he’s following a narrative line in his rhymes.  The protagonist is “Fresh outta school… was a high school grad.” then from high school to struggling to find a job to provide for his child (The Plot) and then the conclusion where the protagonist has to make a crucial decision and decides; “a bird in the hand is worth more than a Bush.”

Add this with all the socio-political jabs in the mix;

Do I hafta sell me a whole lotta of crack
For decent shelter and clothes on my back?
Or should I just wait for help from Bush?
Or Jesse Jackson and operation P.U.S.H.?

and you’ve got a straight up classic.  Rhyme for rhyme.

Ice Cube – A Bird In The Hand (Lyrics)

Fresh outta school cause I was a high school grad.
Gotsta get a job cause I was a high school dad.
Wish I got paid by rapping to the nation,
But that’s not likely so here’s my application.
Pass it to the man at AT&T.
Cause when I was in school i got the AEE.
But there’s S.C. for this youngster
I didn’t have no money, so now I got to punch the
Clock, gotta slave and be half a man
But whitey man says there’s no room for the African.
Always knew that I would clock g’s, but welcome to McDonald’s.
May I take your order please?
Gotta serve you food that might give you cancer,
Cause my son doesn’t take no for an answer.
Now I pay taxes that you never give me back.
What about diapers, bottles, and Similac?
Do I hafta sell me a whole lotta of crack
For decent shelter and clothes on my back?
Or should I just wait for help from Bush?
Or Jesse Jackson and operation P.U.S.H.?
If you ask me the whole thing needs a douche.
A Massengill. What the hell
Crack’ll sell in the neighborhood
To the corner house bitches.
Miss Parker, Little Joe, and Todd Bridges.
Or anybody that he know.
So I cop me a bird better known as a kilo.
Now everybody know I went from po,
To a nigga that got dough.
So now you put the Feds against me,
Cause I couldn’t follow the plan of the presidency.
I’m never gettin’ love again.
But blacks are too fucking broke to Republican.
Now I remember I used to be cool,
Till I stop filling out my W2.
Now senators are getting high.
And your plan against the ghetto backfired.
So now you gotta pep talk.
But sorry this is our only room to walk
Cause we don’t want to drug push,
But a bird in the hand is worth more than a Bush.
